1st International Conference RECIS 2015 Recycling in Island Regions. Special features, problems, solutions, perspectives.
22-23 May 2015, Santorini, Greece.
The islands are probably the areas with pronounced problem in proper waste management, which has evolved as one of the most significant challenges currently facing the insular carriers. Given the high percentage of recyclable materials contained in waste from the islands, the proper organization and management of the recycling of municipal solid waste is considered key to the sustainable management of waste.
The presenting features of island regions, such as the small size in a permanent population and area, or uneven distribution of production waste during the year because of tourism, the growing volume of incoming tourists, the need for transportation of recyclables by sea to the collection and processing centers, the distance from the final recipients of recycled materials are some of the key additional difficulties that exist and that their treatment requires special regulations and proper organization of all stakeholders. Additionally, the specific features which are island regions affect the cost and efficiency of management systems of the municipal solid waste.
The objective of the 1st International Conference on Recycling in Island Regions (RECIS 2015) is bring together all the stakeholders involved, representatives of the local authorities and state institutions, representatives of the alternative management systems, academics, researchers and companies in the field in order to analyze the existing situation, to highlight the possibilities and to propose solutions and ideas to the further enhancement of the recycling in the islands.
